PLAIN CITY, Ohio, April 27, 2020— In 2017, 7JE1038 VALENTINO surpassed 7JE590 ACTION as Select Sires” No. 1 lifetime sales Jersey sire. Just 38 months later and at 12-years-of-age, VALENTINO adds another milestone to his record as Select Sires” first Jersey sire to sell a half million units with 500,261 lifetime sales.
Historical significance
‘VALENTINO has defined the Jersey Revolution,’ says Herby Lutz. ‘He started out as a genomic rock star, at the top of the lists. Then his daughters calved in and the daughter data proved genomics were right and it helped Jersey breeders adopt the new technology.’
Herby Lutz has traveled around the world as Select Sires” Jersey development manager. He has seen VALENTINO daughters on five different continents and talked with countless producers about their performance. ‘VALENTINO daughters are known to be tall and strong with a lot of dairyness. They are cows with fantastic fore udders and outstanding height and width to their rear udders,’ says Lutz. ‘He”s just a bull that is so balanced in what he creates, and the daughters are stamped. You can pick them out as you walk behind them—you know they are VALENTINO daughters.’
VALENTINO”s pedigree tells a unique story, with American Jersey Cattle Association Master Breeders David Allen and Donald and Elsa Sherman playing key roles. In 2006, Allen purchased VALENTINO”s dam, D&E Paramount Violet (E-90%) from the Shermans and in January 2010, five of her sons ranked among the top-10 Jersey Performance IndexTM (JPITM) young sires with VALENTINO holding the No. 1 spot.
As a popular young sire, VALENTINO quickly became a household name for Jersey breeders around the globe. He graduated into the proven lineup in 2012 as the No. 5 GJPI and No. 2 Type sire. Since then, he has consistently ranked high on industry lists and is known for siring beautiful, balanced and profitable daughters. Excitement for VALENTINO genetics has never stalled and his most recent sales rank him as the top-six sire for Jersey sales.
Influence and impact
VALENTINO”s progeny, both sons and daughters, have earned impressive accolades. Records from the American Jersey Cattle Association show that 93 daughters have scored
E-92% or higher with three outstanding daughters classified E-95%. VALENTINO daughters have made headlines in show arenas around the world as cows like Brookbora Valentino Fair Mavis (E-93%) and LC Valentino Clover (E-94%) have earned blue ribbons and purple banners. Jars of Clay Valentino Bridget-P (E-91%) was a highly influential VALENTINO brood cow and the dam of 7JE1294 BARNABAS.
Sons like 7JE1163 IRWIN, 7JE1219 OLIVER-P and 7JE1274 AXIS have been tremendously successful at creating the next generation of profitable Jersey cattle. To date, VALENTINO”s proof includes 19,898 daughters from 2,226 herds and he remains a top-50 sire for PTAT at +1.2 and +6.8 Jersey Udder IndexTM (JUITM).
It takes a team
Select Sires is thrilled to announce this milestone for VALENTINO and congratulate the Allen family on this well-deserved accomplishment. ‘I can”t believe how fortunate I was to acquire a cow like VALENTINO”s mother, the Violet cow,’ says David Allen. ‘I am just tickled to death that we had the opportunity to breed VALENTINO and the experience has been really gratifying.’
In addition to VALENTINO”s breeders, Select Sires extends sincere gratitude to the many team members who have contributed to this accomplishment, including production staff that provide top-notch care each day to maintain VALENTINO”s health and wellbeing.

Solutions – Not Just Semen
‘Our aim is to provide producers with Solutions, not just semen’ claims Genetics Australia”s CEO, Anthony Shelly. ‘We have just released our latest bull team and every bull provides a solution for the issues that dairy farmers face every day. Whether it”s polled, A2, profit, health or type, there are bulls that deliver these solutions in the Genetics Australia line-up’, states Mr Shelly.
Our Holstein team is led by some super new high Profit sires. KARAT (Complete x Slam Dunk) and SONDALO (Jeronimo x Main Event) are both 400 BPI plus sires who deliver solid production, high fertility and excellent udders. Both bulls rate well for the new breeding value Gestation Length. These homegrown sires are joined by 07HO13696 – Lord (Scenario x Yoder) at 411 BPI and new addition 14HO14894 – Big Deal (Nigel x Frazzled) at 399 BPI. These sires offer a high profit solution with solid protein, breed leading fertility and calving ease.
KARDEW (Complete x Slam Dunk) is the A22 leader. KARDEW is the full brother to KARAT and transmits the same quality udders as his brother. KARDEW joins the popular PEMBERTON (Perseus x Jacey) and SUPERDAVE (Superhero x Doorman) who have both consolidated the breeding values this run. Both bulls are available in conventional and sexed semen.
‘Our Polled offering has never been stronger’, states Mr Shelly. ‘It has been a real focus for us, and our breeders are delivering us world class polled bulls’. RYOBI (Powertool x Jett) is an A22 polled sire with exceptional protein and great udders. TIRANO (Jeronimo x Main Event) is the polled brother to SONDALO. Like his brother, TIRANO is a solid profit transmitter with great daughter fertility. DOMINATION (Jeronimo x Monterey) is an outstanding A2 high type polled option. With 109 Overall Type, 111 Mammary and transmitting longer teats, DOMINATION should find a place in many polled breeding programs.
CFP (Drastic x Splendid) is the standout PP bull available in Australia. A22, 107 Mammary, balanced production and 104 for calving ease will cement his popularity. VOMEMPHIS (Drastic x Loyola) is one of the highest type PP bulls available at 110 Overall Type and 111 Mammary. This A22 sire will transmit a balance of health and production along with his fantastic type.
The April ABV release revealed some reliable daughter proven options. JSMONTANA (Montross x Uno) breeds stylish daughters with fantastic udders. This strong health trait transmitter is making his mark globally as well as in Australia. He is joined by newcomers GILES (Josuper x Oman) and DESTINATION (Predestine x Snowman). DESTINATION is from the same family as newcomers KARAT and KARDEW and like the youngsters, DESTINATION transmits solid type, especially udder and adds nice length to the teats. GILES is something of a freak for production traits. This A22 sire is a whopping 38 kgs of protein and 47 kgs of fat with positive deviations. Strong ratings for workability and health combine with a reliable calving ease rating of 105 to make GILES one of the most unique bulls on the market.
Our Jersey line-up has been reinforced with the addition of some interesting new genomic sires. BORUNG (Malachi x ASKN) is an A22 sire that leaves super udders and rates well for the new Mastitis Resistance ABV. BESTYET (OliverP x Raceway) is another A22 sire who transmits balanced production and above average Daughter Fertility. At 108 Overall Type and 110 Mammary, BESTYET is a complete package. DOUGGAN (David x Murmur) leads the way for BPI at 272 and MRFERTILITY (Levigenes x Valerian) is still the first-choice solution for Fertility at 110. These exciting young sires join stalwarts, ASKN, AUSSIEGOLD and Valentino to complete the most diverse Jersey offering in the market today.
‘We have added four new young sires to our Aussie Red program’, states Mr Shelly. ARBMARNUS (VikFilur x Tokyo), ARBFRIZELL (VikNiki x Foske) and ARBNATHAN (VikrFiljar x Gibson) are A22 options backed by high ABV cows and deep cow families. ARBTEDEBEAR (Onstad x Scarebear) is an exciting young Polled option. These outstanding young sires represent the cream of the Aussie Red breed and they will come on line in the coming months. These young sires join a strong group of daughter proven sires lead by ARBCYGNETT and ARBOSCAR.

Despite the base adjustment with the April summary across many traitsthis A22 sire, now with more than 700 milking daughters, also improved his position of both Type & Udder composites, positive Health and Fitness traits and has a BV of $596 Net Merit.
7HO14132 – LIBERTY P (Moritz x Eraser P) maintains a very strong position across the industry as a SCR leader paired with a+6.2% Sire Calving Ease (SCE) . Again, a balanced combination of both Production and Management traits will again see LIBERTY P be a high demand sire thisbreeding season.
With early daughters beginning to calve in the U.S, 7HO12978 – HOUSE (Hang-Time x Jacey)offers a diverse pedigree and a bull that retains his position over +2600 TPI. The nice balance between Production and Type see”s HOUSE over +2.0 DPR and Fertility Index with excellent wellness traits. Breeding daughters of moderate size and stature, adequate dairy strength and outstanding udders is what we can expect to see with this outcross sire.
At twelve years of age we expect to be drawing from the last remaining stocks of the legendary7H10999 BRADNICK(Sanchez x Shottle). Weencourage those looking at continued use of this breed-leading sire toensure you order early to avoid disappointment.
With the improved performance of Bandares sons following the April 2020 sire summary a popular bull such as 14HO13980 FEDORA(Bandares x Kingboy)deserves future consideration. Heoffers a nice profile with his linear demonstrating moderate stature, adequate dairy strength and positive health traits, FEDORA is also over +2600 TPI and +$491 Net Merit
Dairy Farmers looking for that extra reliability can certainly find appeal in 14HO774 DEWARS proof, which now includes close on 1,000 milking US daughters. He continues to shine as a sire that transmits exceptional Health Traits being our ‘International Team’ leader for Health Index at+5.9. It”s easy to see why, 14HO774 DEWARS has extremely low SCS scores to go with +DPR, +PLand+PTA Livability and Breeders in Australia with daughters freshening certainly like the way they are cut.
A Bandares son in the form of JSYOLO(Bandares x Meridian)has had an impressive sire summary following April and improves his position with an impressive +2723 TPI and $600 Net Merit. Over +2.00 on udder composite, JSYOLO is also amongst the industries best when it comes to settling cows in-calf with a strong SCR score. JSYOLO”s grand dam is the dam of the most influential ‘Polled’ bull in the Holstein breed in JSPOWERBALL P.
As 14JE00754 GRANT(Volcano x Galvanize)begins to have daughters calving in the U.S over the Summer, we can expect the 1st crop of daughters to calve in Australia very soon. This NO Valentino pedigree will continue to provide an alternative bloodline for many Jersey breeders as his proof demonstrates an improvement in DWP Index +$501 (Dairy Wellness Profit) associated with positive individual Wellness Traits. A balanced linear for both Type and Udder composite traits should again see nice uptake for GRANT across the upcomingjoining period.
