Calister MAEBULL has taken a lift in his August ABV and is now a clear choice for dairy farmers looking for reliable, modern genetics. MAEBULL”s balanced proof combines solid yields of protein and fat with positive deviations with strong ratings for health and fertility traits. 112 for daughter fertility, 193 for cell count and 110 for survival, makes him one of the best proven sires in the breed for these important traits. ‘He is the kind of bull that exemplifies our breeding program’, states Anthony Shelly, CEO of Genetics Australia, ‘and we are looking forward to seeing some sons enter our genomic program in the coming months’.

The August ABV run also sees the emergence of several new genomic ‘hotshots’. ‘Our ongoing relationship with many of Australia”s top Holstein breeding herds is paying dividends’, claims Shelly. ‘We have a solid group of Australian bred young sires that are the equal of the best genetics we can source anywhere in the world’.

New genomic sires, WOOKIE, SUPERDAVE, KADE, TERRAINE and BOOKDREAM make their debut on top of the BPI list. With an ASI of 269, WOOKIE is an elite A22 production sire with extreme deviations. This Rookie son is an ideal choice to restore the production balance. KADE is a Superhero son from a Silver dam and is an excellent choice to improve daughter fertility with his rating of 115. Solid production, very good genomic type, strong survival and cell count, round out his complete package. TERRAINE is an Alltime son from a Supersire dam and is a protein specialist at 28kgs. When this protein rating is combined with 111 for fertility, 108 for survival and positive feed conversion efficiency, KADE becomes one of the breeds more unique sires. These three bulls were bred by Trevor Henry and family of Wilara Holsteins in Tinamba, Victoria.

SUPERDAVE was bred by David and Trudy Fiebig of Mt Gambier and is our highest BPI newcomer. SUPERDAVE comes from the same family that produced breed great Donor. SUPERDAVE transmits superior fat and protein, fertility and cell count. BOOKDREAM, bred by John and Vicki Lillico of Smithton, Tasmania, is a son of the popular sire ROYALMAN and is a great production transmitter. Just as important are his positive ratings for pin set, teat length and daughter fertility. These five new diverse genomic sires represent the best of Australian breeding.

Genetics Australia has a fantastic line-up of German sires that sit high in the BPI rankings. The group is led by GGISEMINO a Silver son with 330 BPI. GGISEMINO is an elite genomic type sire with ratings of 105 for Overall Type and 107 for Mammary System. Superior workability ratings and a solid performance for production and health traits make GGISEMINO an easy choice. An A22 sire, he will be used extensively in the Genetics Australia breeding program. GGIBAJOU is an elite protein sire at +25kgs and also has a strong udder rating at 107. Sired by the German Balisto son Barcley and from a Racer dam, GGIBAJOU offers a different pedigree option as well as solid ratings for health and survival. GGIBASEMENT is a son of the highly rated Balisto who provides the unique combination of high fertility, calving ease, longer teats and high production. It is not surprising he has become a popular choice. Another sire that has proven to be very popular is the PP bull GGIPALETTI. This polled Powerball son will sire 100% polled calves while excelling for fertility and mammary System.

‘Our high BPI German sires add depth to our offering and provide breeders with some alternative pedigrees and trait combinations’, explains Mr Shelly.

Our North American partners World Wide Sires and Jetstream Genetics are also contributing to our elite BPI sires. From World Wide Sires comes 14HO13980 – FEDORA, a product of the high-powered Sandy Valley breeding program. This Bandares son has already been used to breed the next generation of sons and comes with great ratings for fertility, cell count and production. MRMASTERMIND is a new sire from the Jetstream Genetics. A high protein, fertility and health sire, MRMASTERMIND is a teat length and udder improver who will find a place in many breeding programs.

‘This is the most complete group of high BPI profit driven sires we have delivered to the marketplace for some time’, says Mr Shelly. ‘There is a bull for everyone in this very strong line-up and we are pleased to be able to keep our commitment to the Australian industry of providing the best genetics selected for Australian farming conditions’.

GENETICS AUSTRALIA CONFIRMS SALE OF PARWAN PARK SOUTH.

Australia”s largest genetics supplier, Genetics Australia Co-operative, has confirmed the $14.65 million sale of one of its major property holdings.

The 125-hectare Parwan Park South near Bacchus Marsh will be sold to a property developer after the sale received strong support from shareholders.

A five-year settlement will allow Genetics Australia (GA) to plan its transition from the site. Proceeds from the sale will be used by GA to invest in new technology and research to benefit shareholders and the Australian dairy industry.

The property was purchased by GA in 1986 and has been used as a quarantine facility for bulls prior to their admission to the Co-operative”s main collection and EU facility Parwan Park.

The sale was overwhelmingly supported by members and endorsed by the GA Board with 98.5 per cent of the responding shareholders voted in favour of the sale.

CEO Anthony Shelly said the opportunity to sell the property emerged from land use changes in the Moorabool Shire and presented an opportunity too good to ignore. ‘The Co-operative is in a strong position and wants to create a positive future by accessing new technology,’ Mr Shelly said. ‘This opportunity to reinvest in research and technology will set a positive path for the next two decades.

‘It will allow the Co-operative to invest in developing the next generation of the best bulls and genetics to deliver profitability for our farming family members.’

GA Chairman Trevor Henry said he was pleased with the strong interest from shareholders. ‘We were very pleased with the response from shareholders who were keen to find out more details and be part of the ballot,’ Mr Henry said.

Mr Shelly said GA had capability on its remaining properties to cover the loss of Parwan Park South while it evaluates other options over the next five years.

‘We can manage long-term without that property but we need to transition those activities to either our Birregurra property or potentially a new greenfield site,’ he said. ‘Nothing is locked in and we will continue to evaluate the current main farm site on the outskirts of Bacchus Marsh and other options.’

Genetics Australia recently celebrated its 60th anniversary. It owns a herd of 350 bulls and is Australia”s leading dairy breeding organisation.

Australia”s largest genetics supplier Genetics Australia Cooperative is calling on all shareholders to vote to proceed on the sale of one of their propertiesknownas Parwan Park South, the 125-hectare property was purchased in 1986 and has been used as a quarantine facility for bulls prior to the admission to the Co-operative”s main collection and EU facility Parwan Park, based on the outskirts of the Bacchus Marsh township.

With recent changes to the land use in the Moorabool Shire the GA Board identified an opportunity to sell to a property developer for $14.65 million and according to Gippsland dairy farmer and GA Chairman Trevor Henry, it provides a fantastic opportunity for the Cooperative and one not to be missed.

‘Board and Management have been through an exhaustive process to ensure all the financial, legal and taxation issues have been assessed and we have agreed to purchase subject to shareholder approval’ he said. ‘Under the conditional contract of sale, the property will remain in the control of the Cooperative for 5 years with final settlement in 60 months sowe have commenced a process to explore options for alternatives to the current property use but the sale will not hamper the current or future operations of the Co-operative’.

‘A letter has recently been sent to all shareholders and we are seeking their approval to vote in favour of the Board”s recommendation. Ballot papers need to be returned to the Co-operative by 12pm Thursday 21st June’.

Mr Henry said if the shareholder vote is successful the proceeds of the sale will give the Cooperative options to invest in emerging technologies and changes to infrastructure into the future that will benefit all shareholders.

We have been advised by DataGene that the genotype that forms part of TAHBILK”s breeding value is incorrect. DNA analysis of some of TAHBILK”s progeny has been cross referenced to the genotype on file and it was determined that the genotype was from a closely related bull. A subsequent DNA sample was provided from TAHBILK and the DNA of the progeny now match that sample. It is impossible to determine where in the process the error in the allocation of the genotype to the bull occurred. Both Datagene and Genetics Australia have spent a great deal of time in investigating the error and have concluded that there is no further conclusion other than this wrong allocation.

Based on the current number of milking daughters the result will mean that the ABV of TAHBILK will be different in some respects when it is released in August. A comparison of the April ABV for TAHBILK and his most recent provisional breeding value indicates the following:
• Production – very little change,
• Type – some small change for individual traits but little change for Overall Type and Mammary,
• Workability – very little change,
• Survival – decrease in Overall Survival and Residual Survival,
• Cell Count – small decrease,
• Fertility – small decrease.

These changes will mean that there will be a change in the bull”s BPI. We expect more daughters will be included in his August and ABVs can change based on daughter numbers and records in progress but the main change for TAHBILK in August will be based on the change in his genotype.

TAHBILK is still a key member of our bull team. His daughter performance is still strong and reports from those milking his 127 daughters, and his likeability rating indicate that they are solid contributors to their herds.
A review of the process in genotype collection and allocation from farm to lab is being completed by Genetics Australia and DataGene to ensure an error like this will be near impossible in the future.

The April 2017 Australian proof release includes some excellent results from Genetics Australia”s Aussie Red program, that will help red breeders and cross breeders worldwide to improve their profits. There are three obvious highlights to report:-

The New Graduates:

These include two outstanding sires in ARBSPRING and ARBSCAREBEAR.

ARBSPRING (Tosikko x Fynaks) BPI 261, HWT 199 and TWI 298 comes from the Birdie cow family at Beaulands. He has a top all round proof with the highlight being his outstanding type proof. This contributes to his outstanding rating of 298 for the TWI – Type Weighted Index.

In addition, ARBSPRING has an outstanding production proof, indicating improvement in protein, milk and fat as well as improving milk composition. His high ratings for cell count, workability traits and survival will add to his appeal. ARBSPRING will be a very suitable choice to mate to daughters of VFOSKE and his many sons.

ARBSCAREBEAR (Foxke x Andersta) BPI 274, HWI 219 and TWI 212 comes from the Krissy cow family at Johville Park. ARBSCAREBEAR offers an outstanding proof for increasing the production of milk, protein and fat as well as improving milk composition.

His high ratings for workability traits (team leader for farmer likeability), the mammary system, cell count, daughter fertility and survival will ensure high demand for him in Australia and in many countries throughout the world.

These two top proven sires are closely followed by four more young sires that also have very high initial proofs.

ARBABBOTT (Tosikko x Fynaks) BPI 227, HWI 163 and TWI 215 comes from the Rosie cow family at Beaulands. He is bred on similar lines to ARBSPRING and also offers a top production proof.

ARBABBOTT offers sound ratings across the board for temperament, farmer likeability, cell counts, type, daughter fertility and survival. We are very pleased to be able to offer two outstanding sons ARBABBOTT and ARBSPRING of the great Finnish sire Tossiko. Fynaks bred many top daughters in Australia and two of them are the dams of both ARBABBOTT and ARBSPRING.

ARBDAIRYWEEK (Foske x Ascona) A22 from the Emerald cow family at Beaulands is another successful son of Foske to be proven in Australia.

His many strengths include high ratings for the mammary system, cell count, daughter fertility and survival as well as having a sound well balanced production proof.

ARBSWOOPER (Gedbo x Peterslund) from the Macy cow family at Johville Park is another valuable addition to our team. In addition to offering high production plus improving milk composition, he is in the top group for improving milking speed.

An additional strength should be calving ease. There are three calving ease bulls in his sire pathway Gedbo, Peterslund and Valon. This should make ARBSWOOPER a very good choice to mate to maiden heifers.

ARBRON (Fastrup x Fynaks) from the Rosie cow family at Beaulands is another worthwhile new addition to our team. Two sons of Beaulands Aks Rosie 2 – ARBABBOTT (by Tossiko) and ARBRON (by Fastrup) were included for Genetics Australia”s Aussie Red Progeny Test program and they both graduated.

The strength of ARBRON include high ratings for the production of milk, protein and fat, farmer likeability, cell count and survival.

Our older proven performers are still holding their own!

ARBICESTAR A22 (Andersta x Christiansborg)

ARBICESTAR offers high production of milk, protein and fat plus and improvement in milk composition. In addition, his current proof includes high ratings for cell count, daughter fertility and survival. ARBICESTAR is our new team leader for improving daughter fertility and he is in the top group for survival.

ARBOBAMA (Obroling x Botans)

ARBOBAMA transmits high production of protein plus a significant improvement in protein composition. ARBOBAMA is one of the best choices for improved survival. With a sire pathway of OBROLIN x BOTANS, ARBOBAMA should be a calving ease option and an obvious choice to mate to maiden heifers.

ARBBONJOVI (Orraryd x Torp 882)

ARBBONJOVI is now known as MR RELIABILITY as his proof is based on data from 1620 Australian daughters in nearly 230 Australian herds. He remains one of the best Red bulls to improve production of fat and fat composition. In addition he has high ratings for improving the mammary system, daughter fertility and cell count.

ARBHILLY (Vest Delta x Fynaks)

ARBHILLY remains the bull to improve milk flow. ARBHILLY is an obvious choice to mate to high composition but low milk flow cows to improve production and profit.

In addition, he offers high ratings for workability traits, type and survival.

The FutureGen Team

This group of bulls represents the future of the Aussie Red breed in Australia.

ARBGLACIER (Foske x Tossiko) ARBGLACIER has the potential to transmit high protein and fat production along with quality udders and correct rumps.

ARBMUFASA (Andrei x Foske) ARBMUFASA is another sire with tremendous production transmitting potential.

ARBISAAK (Tossiko x Bonjovi) An A22 sire with solid production and great cell count.

ARBOSCAR (Foske x Tossiko) ARBOSCAR has great type transmitting potential coupled with great fertility genetics.

ARBSTEJAC (Eik x Peterslund) ARBSTEJAC is another solid production sire offering positive yields and devaitions.

ARBREDHERO (Tossiko x FynAks) ARBREDHERO offers improved workabilities with outstanding cell count.

ARBLONGROAD-P (Foske x Oygarden) A polled A22 sire offering fertility improvement.

Watchout for ARBREDHERO and ARBLONGROAD who are both starting to add daughters to their breeding value. They are potential proven graduates for April 2018.

Genomic technology is becoming more and more reliable following each ABV release and has made significant increases in reliability as the technology has evolved during the past five years. Today the most reliable bull”s available are those that combine genomic data with actual Australian daughter performance. The 2017 April ABV just released has highlighted several new high BPI sires backed by daughters with actual Australian performance.

In the Holstein breed, the best newcomer is MAEBULL (Palermo x Shottle). Bred by Craig Lister of Calister Holsteins, Calivil, Victoria, MAEBULL is 90% reliable for production traits with 69 milking daughters combined with his genomic data. He offers increases to protein and fat yield combined with moderate milk flow to provide a balanced production ABV with positive deviations. With a BPI of 298, his average sized daughters have shallow snuggly attached udders and genomics has given us the additional tool to focus on health traits and this is where MAEBULL excels. High ratings for Survival (109), Cell Count (177) and Daughter Fertility (109) make him one of the best bulls available for these important profitable traits.

MAEBULL ranks just behind the number one daughter proven sire GEEMCEE who has consolidated his position at the top of the list with an impressive BPI of 304. This fertility, component and calving ease specialist was a popular choice in 2016 and we expect demand to continue to be strong in 2017.

ROYALMAN (266 BPI) is a new daughter proven sire that has delivered on his genomic promise. This Goldwyn son bred by John and Vicki Lillico of Smithton, Tasmania has 183 daughters in his production proof and boasts an impressive 96% reliability for production as well as good yields and components. Like MAEBULL, ROYALMAN is a strong health bull who shines for daughter fertility with an impressive ABV of 112.

GEEMCEE, MAEBULL and ROYALMAN combine with WRANGLER (260 BPI), GOLDCREST (275 BPI), CHRISTMAS (256 BPI) and TRICKIN (296 BPI) and others to deliver the strongest group of daughter proven sires now available.

While the genetic progress has been accelerated by the addition of genomic data it is reliable bulls such as MEDALLION that also still appeals to many farmers. Selected in the very early phase of genomic technology he has continued to be the most reliable choice for mammary improvement maintaining a top 1% udder improvement at 114 and is now 99% reliable for production and type traits.

On the genomic front, ROWLING leads the Genetics Australia team at 327 BPI and was bred by Russell and Rebecca McMillan of Nanneella, Victoria. ROWLING ranks in the top 1% for BPI, HWI, TWI and ASI and offers outcross genetics. He is also the equal best sire for udders in the top10 genomic sires.

At 317BPI, SILVERLINE (Silver x Fever) also ranks in the top 1% of the breed for all indices and provides an alternative pedigree. Bred by Glomar Holsteins he is a strong production transmitter.

Genetics Australia General Manager, Anthony Shelly says the Genetics Australia Holstein line-up is as strong as ever.

‘It”s pleasing to see the quality of our daughter proven sires like MAEBULL that provide farmers with some very reliable options, but we are equally pleased to have bulls of the calibre of ROWLING in our genomic team who will undoubtedly become a top daughter proven star in the future’.

The best new sire in the Jersey breed is Beulah TAHBILK bred by Daryl and Lani Hoey of Katunga, Victoria. At 299 BPI based on 72 milking daughters, TAHBILK provides the most reliable high BPI option available to Australian Jersey breeders. TAHBILK daughters are hard to fault, very consistent displaying fantastic frames combined with wide sloping rumps and correct legs. Udders are strong at 111 and attachments and teat placement are exceptional. Workability ratings are off the scale and survival is a real feature. TAHBILK is proving very popular in Australia and his semen will be heavily exported in 2017. An A22 sire completes the total package.

Two Broadlin bulls lead the Jersey genomic listing. ALGERNON, a Navarian son at 278 BPI and LEVIGENES, a Vanahlem son at 276 BPI are both from the well-known Vanessa family owned by the Broad family of Lockington, Victoria. Both bulls have strong ratings for production and transmit outstanding protein deviations. With strong ratings for type and survival, these two young sires will breed the type of Jersey cows the modern Jersey breeder demands.

Mr Shelly said It”s exciting to have such a quality new Jersey graduate in TAHBILK.

‘TAHBILK is the type of bull that people will be talking about in 20 years” time and his sons will feature heavily in our genomic program. He will continue to build on the international appeal of Australian Jerseys and he will soon have daughters milking in South Africa and New Zealand where his demand will continue to grow.’

In the Australian Reds, the VFOSKE son ARBSCAREBEAR and the Tossiko son ARBSPRING are the two best new bulls in the breed. At 274 BPI, ARBSCAREBEAR sits just behind his highly-rated sire and transmits many of the same characteristics., with solid ratings for fertility and cell count as well as superior production. ARBSPRING is shaping up to be the breeds next type specialist at 107 for Overall Type and 109 for Mammary. Combine this with 261 BPI, solid ratings for Cell Count and breed leading protein yield we have a sire that will be used in many red breeding programs or for cross breeding.

The Genetics Australia team of proven and genomic sires has never been stronger, claims Mr Shelly.

‘We are pleased to be able to cater for the breeding needs our shareholders and farmers in general with this diverse and reliable offering’

Bacchus Marsh, Thursday 24th 2016:

Australian Holstein legend DELSANTO passed away yesterday aged 12 years. DELSANTO was one of the oldest bulls in active service at Genetics Australia. It appears that he died of heart failure.

DELSANTO was one of a number of INFORMER sons at Genetics Australia and was renowned for siring cows with tremendous strength, capacity and milk components with medium stature and in this respect, he is a complete contrast to many of the imported sires available today.

His genetics have stood the test of time and he still ranks in the top 1% of the population for BPI, TWI, HWI and is in the top 2% for udders. He currently has just short of 2500 daughters in his production proof and is set to add many more over the next few years. His semen has been exported internationally to the USA, Europe, New Zealand, Latin America and South Africa.

DELSANTO was bred by Ian and Peter Willcocks of Manna Farm Holsteins and comes from their outstanding “D” family. His dam, grand-dam and great grand-dam are great examples of the “Australian Cow” and his great grand-dam, Manna Farm Apollo Dee is a former Australian Cow of the Year.

DELSANTO’s legacy is already being felt through a number of sons including rising star PICOLA. PICOLA is the sire of a dozen or so sons at Genetics Australia and next year there will be great grand-sons of DELSANTO included in our genomic young sire line up.

The impact of DELSANTO and his unique mix of genetics will be felt for years through his descendants. He will be remembered as a great sire of the “Australian kind of cow”.
